About Winslow Township

Winslow Township takes its name from Edward Winslow Coffin, son of nineteenth-century glass manufacturer William Coffin Sr., who bought large stretches of timberland in the pine forest west of Hammonton and, with his son-in-law Thomas Jefferson Perce and son William Coffin Jr., built the Winslow Glass Works there. The township incorporated in 1845 out of Gloucester Township, holding its first meeting at Josiah Albertson’s Blue Anchor Inn, and for decades the glass trade drawn from the area’s timber, clay and sand was its defining industry before it faded out around the turn of the twentieth century.

Winslow stayed a largely agricultural community through the early twentieth century, and much of the township now sits within the Pinelands National Reserve, limiting further development. Growth returned when the Atlantic City Expressway opened an interchange in the township in the 1960s, drawing developers toward the Sicklerville section, where Levitt & Sons built large tracts of housing through the 1970s.

A township that ran a glassworks for the better part of a century before turning to Pinelands-restricted farmland and then postwar tract housing tends to hold three distinct kinds of material: early glassworking-era tools and tableware, farm-family silver from the long agricultural stretch in between, and the mass-built costume jewelry of a 1970s suburban wave.
