About West Caldwell Township

West Caldwell’s roots lie in the Horseneck Tract, land that Newark settlers bought from the Lenape in the early eighteenth century, stretching from the Passaic River east to the First Watchung Mountain. After the Revolutionary War the tract was renamed Caldwell Township, honoring pastor James Caldwell, said to have used pages torn from his church’s bibles to load soldiers’ cannons during the fighting. As the town center along Bloomfield Avenue grew more developed through the 1880s, it split off in 1892 as Caldwell Borough, leaving the surrounding farmland and swamp in the township.

The less developed western section of Caldwell Borough held two small settlements, Franklin and Westville, which consolidated in 1904 to incorporate as West Caldwell in their own right, with Caleb Crane, of the family related to Montclair’s Israel Crane, serving as first mayor. In 1981 the borough reorganized itself as a township, one of a number of Essex County municipalities to make the same change around that time. Hatfield Swamp, along the township’s western edge, remains a protected wetland largely closed to building.

A town assembled from two rural hamlets rather than grown outward from one central square means its oldest material tends to come from working farms rather than a formal downtown — plainer silver and modest jewelry from agricultural households, distinct from the heavier, more decorative pieces a dense commercial center usually produces.
