About Voorhees Township

Voorhees Township was carved out of Waterford Township in 1899 and named for Foster McGowan Voorhees, the sitting governor who signed the act creating it; a portion of the new township was itself given up in 1924 to form Gibbsboro. The land’s most storied piece is the old Stafford Farm: tradition holds that George Washington deeded it to John Stafford in 1773, and the same family worked it for more than two centuries before it became, in 2021, the site of the Saddlehill Vineyard and Winery. The Glendale Methodist Episcopal Church, a Greek Revival building raised in 1855, is old enough to have earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Voorhees stayed largely rural well into the twentieth century — the original West Jersey hospital was built here in 1973, when the township was still mostly farmland, and only became part of the larger Virtua Health system decades later, after that hospital was replaced by a new facility in 2011. A township that moved almost directly from an eighteenth-century farm grant to a late-twentieth-century suburb has a thin nineteenth-century record, and the objects tied to its history skew accordingly: colonial-era farm tools and Revolutionary-era land grants at one end, and mid-century suburban gold at the other, with comparatively little from the Victorian years between.
