About Summit

Long known to its earliest settlers around 1710 simply as Turkey Hill, the ridge that became Summit picked up new names as the decades passed — Beacon Hill during the Revolutionary War, when a warning beacon here alerted New Jersey militia to British movements, and later the Heights over Springfield, as the area remained part of Springfield Township for generations. In 1837, sawmill owner Jonathan Crane Bonnell donated land so the Morris and Essex Railroad could cross what was then called simply the Summit hill, spurring enough growth that Summit was incorporated as a township in 1869 and reincorporated as a city in 1899.

Once the railroad arrived, Summit became a fashionable retreat for New Yorkers escaping the city, and by the late nineteenth century four large resort hotels operated here, the largest with more than two hundred rooms and one of the state’s first elevators. Silk weaving thrived alongside the resort trade before declining after a 1915 strike at the Summit Silk Company. After the Second World War, the resort hotels and mill jobs gave way to a suburban building boom of tree-lined streets and architect-designed houses. A hilltop town that moved through an agricultural, a resort-hotel and a commuter-suburb era in barely two centuries carries traces of each: silk-era mill tokens and Gilded Age jewelry sit alongside the mid-century gold rings of its postwar boom.
