About Stratford

The earliest settlement here grew up around the White Horse Tavern in the 1740s, a crossroads hamlet known simply as White Horse; the Stratford Quaker Store is the only building to survive from that colonial-era village. Real estate developers took over in the 1880s, when the Rural Land Improvement Company laid out the neighborhood known as Old Stratford and renamed the place for Stratford-upon-Avon in England. The Borough of Stratford was formally created in February 1925 out of Clementon Township, one of seven separate municipalities that emerged from the old township’s breakup.

Growth continued well into the twentieth century: in the 1960s, Hunt’s farm along the North Branch of Big Timber Creek was sold off to developers and became the Laurel Mill Farms subdivision. Between the tavern-era crossroads, the land-company rebranding of the 1880s and the postwar farm-to-subdivision pattern of the 1960s, Stratford’s housing spans nearly two centuries of building styles — an old tavern token belongs to this landscape no less than a piece of mid-century costume jewelry from a Laurel Mill Farms ranch house.
