About Springfield Township

Springfield split from Elizabeth Township and Newark Township in 1794 and became one of the state’s original 104 townships four years later, eventually giving up land of its own to form New Providence Township, Livingston, Summit and Cranford. Its defining moment came on June 23, 1780, when Hessian General Wilhelm von Knyphausen marched British troops out of Elizabethtown toward the village. General Nathanael Greene’s outnumbered Continentals were forced to fall back, and the retreating British burned much of Springfield as they left — the last major engagement of the Revolutionary War fought on New Jersey soil.

The Cannon Ball House, a farmhouse raised around 1741, was one of only three buildings left standing after the British burned the village, having served the army as a hospital during the battle; a cannonball later found lodged in one of its beams gave the house its name, before the Springfield Historical Society acquired it in 1955. Long after the war, Springfield’s Baltusrol Golf Club became a fixture of championship golf, hosting the U.S. Open seven times and the PGA Championship in 2016. In a township that rebuilt itself twice — once after a colonial-era burning and again as the farmland around it became suburb — militia buttons, old coins and Revolutionary-era relics fit its story more naturally than anything tied to a single industry or mill.
