About Somerdale

Somerdale was created on April 23, 1929, from part of Clementon Township. It was one of seven municipalities eventually carved from that now-vanished township, and one of five created on the same date, alongside Hi-Nella, Lindenwold, Pine Hill and Pine Valley. Frank Rebstock sat on its first borough council that year, and the town settled in between Cherry Hill, Gloucester Township, Hi-Nella, Lawnside, Lindenwold, Magnolia, Stratford and Voorhees.

Much of what Somerdale knows about itself it owes to Martin C. Hanson, who moved to town in 1946, served on council through most of the 1950s and as mayor for two terms after that, and wrote a book on the borough’s past. In 1963 he led the fight to keep the White Horse Tavern from being torn down. The Warwick Tavern and the church of Our Lady of Grace are among the other landmarks the local historical society records. For the borough’s ninetieth anniversary in 2019, residents compiled a history of the town since 1929 and buried a time capsule at Borough Hall, to be opened in 2079.

In a borough founded in 1929, whose best-known historian arrived in 1946, the inheritance waiting in drawers is mostly mid-century: wedding bands, school and service rings, and the sterling that couples of that era received as gifts and rarely used.
