Runnemede’s route to independence ran through the defunct Centre Township: the New Jersey Legislature authorized the borough’s incorporation on March 23, 1926, and voters made it official five weeks later, in the same two-day window that also created the neighboring boroughs of Bellmawr, Mount Ephraim and Lawnside. Where the name itself came from is less settled. Local tradition once tied it to a Native American term for running water, and other stories credited General George Meade or a nearby tavern’s “rum we need,” but those explanations have since been refuted; sources instead point to Runnymede, England.
Runnemede’s best-known modern export has nothing to do with borough politics: Mister Softee, the ice cream truck franchiser whose trucks have long been a familiar summer sound across close to twenty states, has been headquartered in the borough since 1958. A small Camden County borough born in the same mid-1920s burst of New Jersey incorporations as its neighbors, and still home to a business built on nickels and dimes handed through a truck window, is as likely as any to have small stores of old coins tucked away in its older houses.
