Roseland was part of the Horseneck Tract, a large stretch of western Essex County that colonial settlers purchased from the Lenni Lenape in 1702. Originally called Centerville, the community changed its name in 1874 to avoid confusion with several other New Jersey towns of the same name, choosing Roseland over the alternative of Roselyn. From 1938 to 1972, the Becker Farm Railroad, a miniature line also known as the Centerville and Southwestern Railroad, operated on farmland that once covered nearly half the borough and is now largely a business complex, though traces of the railroad survive.
Roseland became its own borough on April 10, 1908, after Livingston Township officials rejected a 1907 petition from local residents asking for a school to serve their growing families. In the decades since, the borough has drawn corporate campuses rather than heavy industry, from law firms and a payroll-processing giant to jam maker Polaner and, since 2003, the worldwide headquarters of pharmaceutical company Organon International. A town that grew out of a rejected school petition into its own municipality, and later filled with corporate offices rather than factories, tends to hold the office-era jewelry and wristwatches of a white-collar suburb more than the industrial keepsakes of a mill town.
