About Pitman

Pitman grew out of a Methodist summer camp meeting first laid out in 1871, when land in Glassboro and Mantua Township was set aside for the gathering. The following year the New Jersey Conference Camp Meeting Association chartered the site, known as Pitman Grove, with an auditorium at its center and twelve roads radiating out from it like spokes on a wheel. Canvas tents along those roads slowly gave way to wooden cottages, and by the 1880s some four hundred of them stood on the grounds; enough families had begun staying through the winter that the borough opened its first public school in 1884. Businesses spread north of the Grove into an area then called Arbutus Hill, and Alcyon Park opened in 1892.

Grove directors resisted turning the religious retreat into an ordinary town, but in 1904 residents voted for incorporation, and Governor Edward C. Stokes signed the borough into existence the following May. Pitman remained a dry town until 2014, when the council began permitting liquor licenses and breweries opened in the Uptown business district. A community built cottage by cottage around a camp meeting, and kept dry for over a century afterward, is the sort of place where the modest keepsakes of church-going households — a christening spoon, a confirmation cross, a few old coins saved in a jar — are more likely to surface than anything showy.
