About Pine Hill

Pine Hill became its own borough on April 23, 1929, split off from the since-dissolved Clementon Township along with four sibling boroughs incorporated that same day: Hi-Nella, Lindenwold, Pine Valley and Somerdale. Before settling on its present name, the community had been called Mont Ararat and then Clementon Heights; the borough took the name Pine Hill to reflect the pine woods and hilly ground around it. It grew along the boundary lines it still shares with Berlin, Clementon, Gloucester Township, Lindenwold and Winslow Township.

Nearly a century later, in 2022, neighboring Pine Valley voted to dissolve itself and merge into Pine Hill, bringing its golf course into the borough in the first merger of two New Jersey municipalities since Princeton’s reunification in 2011. A place whose recorded life runs from a 1929 incorporation to a 2022 merger has passed through most of a century of American households, exactly the kind of span that turns up an old wedding band, a pocket watch or a jar of silver coins when a family finally clears out a house.
