About Pennsauken Township

Pennsauken Township incorporated in 1892 from the since-dissolved Stockton Township, taking a name likely rooted in the Lenape word for a tobacco pouch, or possibly a blend of William Penn’s name with a term for a water inlet. In 1933 it became home to the first drive-in movie theater in the country, the Camden Drive-In, which opened with a comedy called Wives Beware.

For half a century the township was also known for the Pennsauken Mart, a large indoor market with many independent vendors that closed in 2006 when plans for a sports arena and conference complex were announced; those plans never materialized, and a luxury apartment complex eventually rose on the site instead. Petty’s Island, a stretch of land in the Delaware River within the township’s boundaries, spent decades as an oil storage facility before being turned over for conversion into a state park and nature preserve, now also a nesting ground for bald eagles.
