About Parsippany-Troy Hills Township

The name Parsippany comes from a Lenape word, parsipanong, meaning roughly “the place where the river winds through the valley.” Dutch traders first claimed the region as part of New Netherland in the early seventeenth century, trading with Native Americans until conflicts halted the exchange in 1643; England took control of the colony in 1664, and English settlers moved into the fertile valley around 1700. The township was incorporated in 1928, split off from Hanover Township along with neighboring East Hanover Township.

From the 1730s into the early nineteenth century, the area now known as Lake Hiawatha held a large plantation called Beverwyck, worked by enslaved people under Dutch owner Lucas Von Beverhoudt, whose name still marks the neighborhood’s central road. A woman named Phebe Ann Jacobs, enslaved there as a child in 1785, later gained freedom in Maine and is thought to have influenced Harriet Beecher Stowe’s antislavery writing. Guests at Beverwyck reportedly included George Washington, Nathaniel Greene and the Marquis de Lafayette.

In the twentieth century, Tiffany & Co. operated a workshop in Parsippany where, from 1967 to 2015, silversmiths handcrafted both the Vince Lombardi Trophy given to the Super Bowl champion and the Larry O’Brien Trophy given to the NBA champion — a reminder that fine silverwork has a real production history here, made by hand rather than machine.
