Mount Laurel was incorporated as a township in 1872, split from Evesham Township and named for a hill covered in laurel. It stayed a small farming community, centered on landmarks like the Evesham Friends Meeting House and Jacob’s Chapel, until Philadelphia’s suburban growth reached it in the late 1960s.
That growth collided with the township’s zoning rules, producing the landmark Mount Laurel Doctrine, which the New Jersey Supreme Court handed down in 1975 and upheld again in 1983, requiring municipalities statewide to zone realistically for affordable housing. The case grew out of a lawsuit brought on behalf of the township’s own Black residents, including longtime resident Ethel Lawrence, and the litigation and resistance to it played out over more than a decade before the doctrine took the shape state courts still use today.
Farmland turned into subdivisions within a single generation here, and the tract houses built through the 1970s and 1980s, once the zoning fight finally allowed them, belong to an era when a couple’s wedding jewelry was as likely to come from a suburban shopping mall counter as from a family jeweler downtown.
