Mount Holly’s mills came first. Walter Reeves settled the land in 1677, buying it from the Lenape and damming Rancocas Creek to power a gristmill and sawmill, and the streets built up around that mill race, High, Church, White, Mill and Pine, held well over two hundred houses by 1800. In December 1776, Continental troops fought a three-day artillery exchange against Hessian forces on Iron Works Hill before slipping away at night, a diversion that helped draw Hessian troops away from Trenton just before Washington crossed the Delaware and won the battle there the next day.
Mount Holly became Burlington County’s seat in 1796, and the courthouse and prison built in those years still anchor its historic district. The prison, designed by Robert Mills, later the architect of the Washington Monument, operated for more than a century and a half before closing in 1965. The mills and dye factories that had employed the town through the nineteenth century began shutting down after the Second World War, a decline only partly offset by nearby military bases.
