About Moorestown Township

Moorestown grew up along a ridge that Lenni Lenape communities had used for its two natural springs, and the first English-speaking settlers, John and Sarah Roberts, arrived in 1682. Quakers built a log meeting house on King’s Highway by 1700, and by 1722, when Thomas and Elizabeth Moore settled nearby, the surrounding farms and lanes were still known collectively as Chester before the newer name gradually took over.

The village sat on the stagecoach line between Camden, Trenton and Philadelphia, and during the Revolutionary War a tavern built in 1745 at Main and Schooley streets was seized by Hessian officers retreating from Philadelphia. Quakers opened Moorestown’s first two schools in 1785, well before the town’s first free public school followed in 1873. A historic district recognized in 1990 now protects hundreds of buildings raised across two centuries of settlement, from a 1742 farmhouse to structures built as late as 1940.

A district built continuously across two centuries, from colonial taverns to Quaker meeting houses to twentieth-century additions, left behind objects from just as many eras: coin silver from the tavern years, mourning jewelry from the Victorian additions, and plain wedding bands from the twentieth-century houses that filled in the historic district last.
