Monroe Township was set off from Washington Township in 1859, while the area still belonged to Camden County, and took its name from President James Monroe. The county line shifted under it in 1871, when Monroe moved into the newly reorganized Gloucester County along with most of Washington Township, and in 1950 another slice of the township was handed back to Winslow Township in Camden County.
What resulted was a wide, loosely settled township stitched together from small crossroads communities, Cross Keys, Downer, New Brooklyn, Berryland and Radix among them, rather than one central downtown. Williamstown grew into the largest of these unincorporated villages. The Hall Street School, built in 1887, is the township’s one entry on the National Register of Historic Places.
