Medford’s first deed dates to 1670, when Samuel Coles bought nine hundred acres that drew the Braddock, Prickett, Stratton, Branin and Wilkins families into what was then known as Upper Evesham. By 1820 the settlement had grown enough to take a post office and a new name, Medford, suggested by a developer who had recently visited its namesake in Massachusetts. The New Jersey Legislature split the township from Evesham in 1847, with its first meeting held at the Cross Roads that March.
Glassmaking defined Medford through most of the nineteenth century. A furnace producing window panes was running by 1825, and by 1850 William Porter operated a factory that, under the names Medford Glass Works and Star Glass, employed some two hundred fifty workers at its peak. The company built housing for owners, managers and laborers alike, and nearly thirty of those workers’ cottages still stand today on Trimble and Mill Streets. The trade closed around 1925, and the Camden and Atlantic Railroad that had once carried Medford’s glass and freight was itself pulled up within a few years.
A company town built to supply its own workforce, where wages sometimes came as scrip redeemable only at the company store, was not always a place where a family’s watch or wedding silver stayed in one drawer for long.
