About Maple Shade Township

Maple Shade began as Chester Township, formed in 1688 and briefly known as Cropwell Township at the very end of the seventeenth century, before becoming one of New Jersey’s original group of townships chartered in 1798. Portions of it were carved away to form Cinnaminson Township in 1860 and Moorestown Township in 1922, and in 1945 voters chose to rename what remained Maple Shade Township.

Five years later, on the evening of June 11, 1950, a young Martin Luther King Jr. and three friends were refused service at Mary’s Cafe, a Maple Shade tavern known for turning away Black customers. Their response, staying seated rather than leaving, is remembered as an early instance of the nonviolent approach King would later make central to the civil rights movement.

A township renamed only five years before that evening at Mary’s Cafe was, in a sense, still introducing itself when it became the site of an early and largely unplanned act of civil disobedience.
