About Mantua Township

Mantua Township takes its name from Mantua Creek, itself named for the Manta, or Mantes, a Lenape subtribe who lived along its banks before European settlement. A popular local belief, repeated even on the township’s own website, holds that the name means frog in the Lenape language, though the historical evidence does not actually support that translation, and the modern spelling may instead owe something to the Italian city of Mantua.

The township was formed out of Greenwich Township in 1853 and lost territory twice afterward, first to the newly created East Greenwich Township in 1881, and again in 1905 when Pitman broke away as its own borough.
