Lumberton grew from two neighboring settlements: Fostertown, cleared and farmed by early colonists, and Eayrestown, which Richard and Elizabeth Eayres settled in the late 1600s and which grew up around a sawmill that made it a center of local trade. The township took its name from the lumber trade that followed, harvesting pitch pine forests to supply building material to Philadelphia.
That trade left a complicated legacy. Some of the township’s earliest families supported slavery while others actively opposed it, and by the nineteenth century Lumberton counted abolitionists among its residents. A house on Creek Road, built in 1824 by a descendant of the founders of nearby Colestown on land his family had bought in 1806, is documented as a stop on the Underground Railroad, where a false well in the yard is said to have hidden people fleeing north.
A township built on sawn pine and, later, on the secrecy of a hidden well has always kept its history close to the ground rather than displayed in silver.
