About Little Falls Township

Little Falls takes its name from a waterfall on the Passaic River near a dam at Beattie’s mill, a feature that shaped the township long before it had a government. The first European settlement dates to 1711, when seven families of Bergen Dutch descent joined together to start farms in the area, and the Speer homestead, believed to date from the 1780s or possibly earlier, is among the oldest houses still standing from that era.

The Morris Canal once cut through the township on its way between the Delaware and Hudson rivers, carrying trade until it closed in 1925; stretches of its route survive today as a greenway. Little Falls became its own township, separate from Acquackanonk Township, in 1868, and gave up land in 1914 to form what was then a new borough to its west. In the twentieth century, the Mountain View Diners Company operated out of the township for nearly two decades, building and shipping prefabricated diners across the country.

A township that spent years manufacturing diners out of gleaming stainless steel sits at an odd angle to the trade in gold and sterling silver, but the two shared a moment: postwar diner counters and postwar hope chests were filling up at the same time, one in steel built to be seen from the road, the other in silver kept for a holiday table.
