Lindenwold was one of five new municipalities carved out of the dissolved Clementon Township on the same day in 1929, alongside Hi-Nella, Pine Hill, the since-merged Pine Valley, and Somerdale. Its name, German for linden forest, came from a resident named Wimer Bedford, who had come across the word while reading a German book and suggested it at the new borough’s first meeting, held in the old firehouse at Linden Avenue and Berlin Road.
Bedford had hoped the borough would plant linden trees along its streets to match the name, but local officials chose cheaper trees instead.
A borough founded by committee vote in a firehouse, and named for a tree its own officials wouldn’t spring for, has never been a place defined by grand estates.
