About Hanover Township

Hanover Township holds the site of the first European settlement in northwest New Jersey: New Englanders settled along the Whippany River in 1685, in an area named for the Native American word Whippanong, meaning place of the arrow wood. The township was named for the German House of Hanover in 1720, honoring King George I, and incorporated in 1740 with the creation of Morris County. Over the following two centuries it was whittled down as Mendham, Chatham, Rockaway, Boonton, Mountain Lakes, Morris Plains, East Hanover, and Parsippany-Troy Hills townships all split away from its original territory.

For most of its history, Hanover Township ran on the power of the Whippany River, which drove iron works and paper mills through a long stretch as a sparsely populated industrial community, before postwar suburban development transformed it. Whippany itself later hosted notable firsts: the country’s first long-distance television transmission was demonstrated there in 1927, and from 1931 to 1966 the community was home to the Seeing Eye, the first guide dog school for the blind in the country.
