About Hainesport Township

The Lenape called this stretch along the Rancocas Creek Sandhickney before Quaker settlers arrived in 1677. By the time of the American Revolution the settlement was known as Long Bridge, for the long wooden span across the creek, and in 1778 American rebels fired on Hessian soldiers here after the bridge was dismantled to block their advance.

The name changed again in 1848, when Barclay Haines bought property along the creek and built a pier by his home, giving rise to the name Haines’ Port, shortened within two years to Hainesport. The township itself was not formally incorporated until 1924, when it was carved out of Lumberton. Mount Moriah AME Church Cemetery, within the township, holds the graves of twenty-two African American Civil War veterans, and Barclay Haines’s 1848 home still stands as a marker of the town’s namesake era.

A creek-side settlement that changed its name three times before finally becoming a township in 1924 — from a Lenape place name, to a wartime bridge, to a nineteenth-century merchant’s pier — carries a longer and more layered past than its modern subdivisions suggest, the kind of place where a Civil War-era keepsake or a mid-century wedding band is equally at home.
