About Haddon Township

European settlement around Newton Creek, in what is now Haddon Township, began in 1681, and the township took its name from Elizabeth Haddon, who arrived in 1701 to manage her father’s large landholdings across the area that would become Haddonfield, Collingswood, and Haddon Township itself. Incorporated in 1865 from Newton Township, Haddon Township went on to give up land repeatedly over the following decades as Haddonfield, Collingswood, Woodlynne, Haddon Heights, Audubon, and Oaklyn each split off to form their own municipalities.

In the late 1830s, a man who had escaped slavery in Maryland and taken the surname Saddler settled here with his family after buying five acres from a local Quaker farmer; the community that grew up around him, known as Saddlertown, became a stop on the Underground Railroad and remains part of the township today. The Newton Union Schoolhouse, a one-room building from 1821, and the Ritz Theatre, built in Colonial Revival style in 1927 as a vaudeville house, both survive from the township’s early years.

A township that kept shrinking as its own neighborhoods grew into independent towns, while a settlement founded by a man escaping bondage endured within it, holds onto small objects the way it holds onto place names — a schoolroom desk, a vaudeville playbill, or an old ring passed down through a Saddlertown family are all pieces of the same long record.
