About Haddon Heights

The land that became Haddon Heights was settled in 1699 by John Hinchman, and building continued sporadically over the next century: John Siddon raised a farmhouse nearby in 1713, and John Thorn Glover dammed King’s Run before 1776 to run a fulling mill. A frame house Jacob Hinchman built by 1720 was later enlarged by Revolutionary War officer Col. Joseph Ellis and eventually purchased by New Jersey governor Joseph Bloomfield.

The town as it exists today dates to 1890, when Benjamin A. Lippincott built a passenger station for the Atlantic City Railroad on his land and, with Charles Hillman, filed a grid street plan for a new community, naming it for its elevation and its nearness to Haddonfield. Large Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and Foursquare houses went up to attract prosperous middle-class families moving out from the cities, and after incorporation as a borough in 1904 — with Lippincott himself elected mayor — a small downtown grew up around the depot and the White Horse Pike, along with eight churches and a synagogue. Passenger rail service ended in 1965, but the tree-shaded streets and houses from that building boom remain.

A railroad suburb built in the 1890s and 1900s for middle-class families relocating from Philadelphia and Camden filled its new Colonial Revival and Queen Anne houses with exactly the kind of gold jewelry and sterling flatware that outfitted a proper household at the turn of the twentieth century.
