About Gloucester City

Gloucester City’s waterfront held a Dutch trading post as early as the 1620s, a fortification called Fort Nassau built for the beaver-pelt trade with the Susquehannock and Lenape along the Dutch-named Zuyd Rivier. Sweden controlled the site from 1638 until 1655, when Peter Stuyvesant dismantled the fort and moved operations across the river. English Quakers established a permanent settlement here in 1677, first known as Axwamus, laid out and surveyed as a town by 1689, then chartered as a city in 1868.

On November 4, 1773, Elizabeth Griscom, later known to history as Betsy Ross, married John Ross at Huggs Tavern, a building torn down in the 1920s whose site is now Proprietor’s Park. In the early 1950s the Twin Bar hosted Bill Haley and his band for eighteen months, a stretch some credit with the group’s shift from country music toward the sound that became rock and roll. Painter Thomas Eakins captured the city’s Delaware River shad fishery in an 1881 work now split between museum collections in New York and Philadelphia.

A river town whose waterfront passed through Dutch, Swedish, and Quaker hands before it was even a century old, and that later drew a lasting Irish American community, is the sort of place where an old trade good or a family’s Sunday-best jewelry has passed through more than one language before landing in an attic.
