About Glassboro

Glassboro takes its name, and its founding, from glassmaking: Solomon Stanger established Glass Works in the Woods here in 1779, and a succession of glass manufacturers followed over the next century and a half, among them Heston-Carpenter Glass Works, Olive Glass Works, Harmony Glass Works, Whitney Brothers Glass Works, and later Owens Bottle Company and Anchor Hocking. The settlement organized as a township in 1878 out of Clayton Township and became a borough in 1920, its charter naming the glass trade directly.

What began as a factory town later became a college town. Glassboro State College, founded in 1923 and since renamed Rowan University, grew into the community’s defining institution, and in 1967 its campus hosted the Glassboro Summit Conference, three days of talks between President Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin held there because the town sat roughly equidistant between Washington and New York. Ronald Reagan later became the first sitting president to address a high school commencement when he spoke at Glassboro High School’s graduation in 1986.

A town that spent a century and a half working glass by hand, then grew up around a state college, left behind the kind of household objects that trace both trades — old glassware from a defunct local works, and the gold class rings and silver keepsakes that a college town tends to accumulate across generations of graduates.
