About Florham Park

Long farmed by the Lenape and then by English and Dutch settlers who arrived between 1680 and 1700, the area that became Florham Park was known for generations for its broom manufacturing, which gave it the early name Broomtown; it was also called Hoppingtown, Columbia and Afton before its present name took hold. The community grew first as part of Hanover Township and then Chatham Township before its own incorporation.

Its modern name comes from two Gilded Age country estates. In 1887, Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly, granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and her husband Hamilton McKown Twombly built an English-style mansion called “Florham,” combining their first names, on more than eight hundred acres. Nearby, Prudential Insurance co-founder Leslie Ward built a second estate, “Brooklake Park,” on roughly a thousand acres where the Brooklake Country Club now stands. Both families backed the petition that led the state legislature to create the new borough in March 1899, and the town took its name, Florham Park, from the two combined estates. A borough built up around two of the era’s grandest private estates is a place where the silver, jewelry and decorative objects of that Gilded Age have had well over a century to be handed down.
