About Fairfield Township

Dutch settlers, including French Huguenots who had assimilated into Dutch communities, bought this stretch of the Passaic River valley from the Lenape and named it “Gansegat,” Dutch for duck’s pond. In 1702, English settlers purchased a large piece of the surrounding Horseneck Tract from the Lenape for a modest quantity of goods, a deal that provoked the Horseneck Riots when colonial authorities tried to evict the settlers for having bought the land without official approval.

The township was formed in February 1798 as Caldwell Township, named for the Reverend James Caldwell, and incorporated that same year as one of New Jersey’s original 104 townships. Over the following century it was steadily reduced by new municipalities splitting away, including Livingston in 1813, Caldwell borough in 1892, Verona Township the same year, North Caldwell in 1898, Essex Fells in 1902 and West Caldwell in 1904; the remaining township took the name Fairfield in 1963. The Van Ness House, built around 1720, and the Fairfield Dutch Reformed Church, whose congregation also dates to 1720, both still stand from the area’s earliest English and Dutch settlement. A valley farmed continuously since the early 1700s, and divided piece by piece into a dozen neighboring towns, is a place where old Dutch and English family pieces, coin and silver alike, have had three centuries to be passed down rather than sold.
