About Evesham Township

Evesham Township was settled by Quakers beginning in 1672 and formally established in November 1688 under the name “Eversham” in the Province of West Jersey, years before Burlington County itself existed; it was incorporated in 1798 as one of New Jersey’s original 104 townships. Portions were later split away to form Washington Township in 1802, Medford Township in 1847 and Mount Laurel Township in 1872, each carved from a township that had once stretched far beyond its present borders.

The township is now most often called Marlton, a name drawn from “marl,” a naturally occurring mix of green clay and shell fragments that was mined locally as fertilizer; that mining drove the area’s first building boom in the 1830s and 1840s and continued until 1930. Recognized as a village in 1758 and formally named in 1845, Marlton kept its historic core intact in what is now a protected district known as Olde Marlton. In the mid-1800s, Milford, a settlement of free and formerly enslaved Black families within the township, served as a station on the Underground Railroad. A farming township that turned marl into fertilizer and building lots for a full century is a place where old coin, tools and jewelry from that long agricultural era have had generations to settle into local households.
