Deptford’s European history began with the Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen May, who was followed into the area by settlers from Sweden and Finland before the land came under British colonial control. Established in 1695 under the name Bethlehem, the township originally covered a vast tract later divided into Monroe, Washington and West Deptford townships and the boroughs of Westville, Woodbury and Woodbury Heights; it was incorporated under its present name in 1798 as one of New Jersey’s first 104 townships, and takes that name from the Deptford district of London on the River Thames.
The old Clement Oak, believed to have sprouted in the 1500s, marked a notable moment in 1793, when balloonist Jean-Pierre Blanchard landed there after flying from Philadelphia, carrying a letter from George Washington that made the trip the country’s first airmail delivery. In more recent history, a severe tornado produced by the remnants of Hurricane Ida struck the township in September 2021, damaging more than a hundred homes. Between the eighteenth-century land grants of its start and the twenty-first-century storm, Deptford has spent three centuries as a crossroads community outside Philadelphia, long enough for old coins, tools and family jewelry to change hands many times over.
