About Delran Township

Delran Township takes its name from the meeting of two waterways at its edge, the Delaware River and Rancocas Creek, a confluence that shaped both the low ground the township sits on and the identity of the place. The New Jersey Legislature carved the township out of Cinnaminson Township in February 1880, giving the riverside community its own local government. The boundary kept moving after that: in 1895 a portion of Delran was itself taken away to help form Riverside Township, part of a broader pattern along this stretch of the Delaware in which farm hamlets split and resettled their borders through the late nineteenth century.

Small crossroads settlements grew up inside the township as this sorting-out continued, among them Bridgeboro, Cambridge, Chesterville, Fairview, Milltown and Riverside Park, each a cluster of houses and stores tied to the roads and water running through the area. Delran borders Cinnaminson, Delanco, Moorestown, Riverside and Willingboro townships and faces Philadelphia across the Delaware, placing it inside the web of small Burlington County municipalities that took shape one incorporation at a time. Houses built along those roads during the decades of splitting and renaming belong to an era when a ring, a coin or a set of flatware was more often kept within a family than replaced.
