About Collingswood

In the late seventeenth century, Quaker families from England and Ireland set up farms along Newton Creek and the Cooper River, in a settlement that took the name Newton Colony and then Newton Township. Much of the land that is now Collingswood was farmed by generations of the Collings family through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the borough, split off from Haddon Township, was incorporated in 1888. That same year Edward Collings Knight, a Collings descendant who had made a fortune in sugar, real estate, and railroads, donated the land that became Knight Park.

Several homes from that farming era still stand, including the 1820s Collings-Knight homestead at Browning Road and Collings Avenue and the Stokes-Lees mansion on Lees Avenue, built in 1707 and among the oldest houses anywhere in Camden County. Sections of Harleigh Cemetery, where poet Walt Whitman is buried, also lie within the borough. Owing to its Quaker roots, Collingswood was founded as a dry town where alcohol could not be sold, a restriction that held for well over a century before craft breweries were finally permitted to operate there in 2015.
