Clementon grew up around a glass factory that Jonathon Haines built around 1800 on a hill across from what is now Clementon Park. Around 1811, Samuel Clement of Haddonfield bought the works and renamed them the Gloucester Glass Works, giving the small settlement around the plant the name Clementon village, with Haines staying on as superintendent before eventually buying the business back. The borough itself wasn’t incorporated until 1925, when it split off from the larger and now-defunct Clementon Township along with eight other new municipalities.
The village lake that gave the glassworks its water power later became the site of Clementon Amusement Park, home for decades to the Jack Rabbit, a wooden roller coaster built in 1919 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company that remained one of the oldest coasters still running in the country until it closed in 2002. That run from a nineteenth-century glass works to a twentieth-century amusement park reflects how small South Jersey settlements often shifted from single-industry manufacturing into recreation and tourism, leaving behind glassware and keepsakes from both eras in the households along the lake.
