About Chatham Borough

The settlement that became Chatham Borough grew up around a crossing of the Passaic River first used by the Lenape along the Minisink Trail. A European settler named John Day built a bridge there in 1710, and for decades the community was known simply as John Day’s Bridge, with a blacksmith shop, a flour mill, and a lumber mill established by 1750. In 1773 residents renamed the village Chatham in honor of William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham, who had spoken up for the colonies in Parliament, and locals stayed active in the Revolutionary War that followed, including printer Shepard Kollock, who ran a press there publishing the New Jersey Journal starting in 1779.

The Morris and Essex Railroad reached Chatham before the Civil War, turning the crossroads village into one of the country’s earliest commuter stops and drawing residents out from Manhattan, twenty miles east. Chatham broke away from the surrounding township in 1892 over a dispute about taxes and services, incorporating as its own borough in 1897. That railroad-driven growth, compressed into a pedestrian-scaled downtown barely a mile across, is the kind of nineteenth-century commuter development that left many area homes furnished with the silver and clocks of an earlier generation’s daily commute.
