About Cedar Grove Township

Cedar Grove was part of the Horseneck Tract purchased from the Lenape in 1702, and it began as a small farming community within the township originally incorporated as Verona in 1892. After Verona split off as its own borough in 1907, the remaining township took the name Cedar Grove the following year, named for the native red cedar trees that used to blanket its hills and valley. Essex County built its mental institution, known as Overbrook, in the township in 1896, and that county-owned land has kept large stretches of Cedar Grove undeveloped compared with its denser neighbors.

In the 1950s and 1960s Cedar Grove became a destination suburb for families leaving Newark and New York City, filling in around the farmland with new houses on land the county hadn’t claimed. Before that shift, the township was known for Frank Dailey’s Meadowbrook Ballroom on Route 23, which hosted big-band era performers including Glenn Miller, the Dorsey brothers, and Frank Sinatra before it turned to dinner theater in 1959. That run of big-band engagements left the kind of era-specific memorabilia, engraved compacts and dance-hall keepsakes, that still surfaces in postwar suburban households.
