About Camden

Camden’s site on the Delaware River drew Dutch traders to Fort Nassau in the 1620s, but lasting settlement came later, when Quakers moved into the area at the end of the seventeenth century seeking religious freedom under the colony’s proprietors. Jacob Cooper helped develop the settlement that took the name Camden, after the Earl of Camden, in 1773, and the city was formally incorporated in 1828. The opening of the Camden and Amboy Railroad in 1830 and the ferry crossings to Philadelphia turned the young city into a transportation hub almost immediately.

Industry defined Camden through the first half of the twentieth century, when the Victor Talking Machine Company, later RCA Victor, the Campbell Soup Company, and the New York Shipbuilding Corporation employed tens of thousands of residents and drew waves of immigrants, first from Eastern Europe and later, during the Second World War, Black workers arriving from the South. The Benjamin Franklin Bridge opened in 1926 to ease ferry traffic across the river. That century of shipbuilding and manufacturing wages, followed by the steep industrial decline of the 1950s through 1980s, left behind generations of households whose modest gold rings, service pins, and factory-era keepsakes now surface far more often than anything grand.
