About Boonton Town

Boonton grew up around an ironworks founded about 1770 by Samuel Ogden, which supplied the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War before passing through several later owners. The business declined until 1830, when a group of New York investors incorporated the New Jersey Iron Company, imported machinery and ironworkers from England, and built a new hillside community called Booneton Falls beside the newly arriving Morris Canal. Main Street still runs pitched against the cliff above the Rockaway River, following what was once a Native American trail. The ironworks flourished for nearly fifty years before closing in 1876, after which the town rebuilt itself around a silk mill, a knife factory and other small manufacturers.

Boonton’s most distinctive industry arrived later: in 1907, local manufacturer Richard Seabury produced, by one account, the first molded organic plastic made in America, work that grew into Boontonware, a dinnerware line sold across the country through the mid-twentieth century, and the new trade drew a cluster of radio and electronics firms to town in the decades that followed.

A town that ran an ironworks, a silk mill and a plastics factory in succession over two centuries left behind an unusually layered mix of material: wrought-iron tools and hardware from its earliest years, mill-town wedding silver from its middle decades, and the costume jewelry and novelty dinnerware of its plastics era layered on top.
