About Bloomfield Township

Bloomfield’s land was first patented to Puritan colonists from Newark and placed under Essex County’s authority in 1675. Dutch families descended from the New Netherland settlers of Acquackanonk bought much of the northern and eastern land through the early 1700s, settling Dutch-speaking neighborhoods such as Stone House Plains and Second River alongside the English communities of Cranetown and Watsessing; the two groups gradually intermarried and merged through the mid-eighteenth century. The township took its formal name and founding in 1812 from the Presbyterian Society organized in 1794 and named for Joseph Bloomfield, a New Jersey governor and Revolutionary War brigadier.

At its founding the township covered an area nearly four times its present size, and lost land repeatedly over the nineteenth century as Glen Ridge, Montclair, Belleville and Woodside Township each split away in turn. Through that period Brookdale’s farms coexisted with an industrializing south end, where the Oakes woollen mill supplied the Union Army during the Civil War and, decades later, the Westinghouse Lamp Plant produced most of the uranium later used in the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, in 1942.

A township that ran farms, textile mills and a wartime industrial plant side by side across two and a half centuries left an unusually wide range of material behind, from plain Dutch farmhouse pewter to the union-shop watches and wedding bands of a twentieth-century manufacturing town.
