About Berlin Township

Berlin Township split off from Waterford Township in 1910 and was itself reduced seventeen years later, when the more developed rail-side settlement separated to become the borough of Berlin, taking a name both places drew from the German capital. Smaller unincorporated places within the township include Crow Foot, Reed Crossing and West Berlin, the last of which lent its name to the single postal designation township voters adopted in 1995 to end decades of mixed mail service from post offices in neighboring Atco and Berlin.

The township lies within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, the first National Reserve established by Congress, a vast expanse of protected pine and oak forest covering much of South Jersey’s interior. Berlin Township’s share of that land sits within the state-designated Pinelands Area, alongside similar protected tracts in six other counties.
