About Berlin Borough

Long before it was Berlin, the crossroads here was known as Long-a-Coming, a name that may echo the Lenape trail once known as Lonaconing or simply describe travelers’ relief at finally reaching the stream that feeds the Great Egg Harbor River. The settlement served as a stagecoach stop midway between Philadelphia and Atlantic City, and briefly held the seat of the newly formed Camden County in the 1840s before the seat moved to Camden itself. A rail line arrived in 1853, and the station went through two more names, Magnolia and then Berlin, before settling on the one that stuck by 1867.

The borough’s historic district, added to the National Register in 1995, holds more than sixty buildings along Haines, Washington and East Taunton avenues, including a Victorian house on Washington Avenue built in 1865, the Queen Anne-style Raughley House of 1888, and the Joseph N. Ross House of 1870, known for its scalloped vergeboard trim.

A stagecoach stop turned rail depot collected the small trade goods of travelers passing through for more than a century, and the Victorian houses built along its main streets in the 1860s and 1880s are typical of the decades when sterling and coin silver still furnished a respectable parlor.
