About Bellmawr

Bellmawr was carved from the defunct Centre Township and incorporated as a borough in 1926, one of three boroughs, along with Mount Ephraim and Runnemede, created from the same territory within a two-day span. The borough took its name from Ernest C. Bell, who had farmed the land before it was developed.

Four decades later, Bellmawr’s police department became the center of a case that reached the United States Supreme Court. Ticket-fixing investigators pressed the borough’s own officers to give statements under threat of losing their jobs, then used those statements to bring criminal charges against them. The Court ruled the following year that compelling and then using such statements violated the officers’ constitutional rights, a decision that created the Garrity warning still used today to advise public employees during internal investigations.

A farm town that incorporated in the same wave as its Camden County neighbors and grew mostly after that point collected the ordinary wedding rings, service medals and flatware of mid-twentieth-century suburban households rather than anything older, the household silver of a place that only became its own town in the 1920s.
