About Barrington

Barrington took its name in the 1880s from developer William Simpson, who named the new settlement after his hometown of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The borough was carved out of the since-dissolved Centre Township and incorporated in 1917, then gave up part of its own land nine years later to help form Lawnside.

For much of the twentieth century Barrington was home to the Edmund Scientific Corporation, based in the borough from 1942. Its company store opened in 1952 and stayed open until 2001, when the consumer side of the business was sold off and moved to Tonawanda, New York. An International Paper box-manufacturing facility has also operated in the borough.

A town built around a long-running company store and a box-manufacturing plant, rather than farmland or a rail depot, leaves a different kind of material behind than its neighbors: everyday household silver and jewelry accumulated the ordinary way, one family at a time, rather than tied to any single industry.
