About Audubon

Audubon grew out of farms and mills first divided among local landowners in the late seventeenth century, when the area still belonged to Newton Township. Two farmhouses from that early period still stand: the Low-Stokes-Nicholson house, raised around 1732, and a home locals still call the Mansion House, built by Simon Breach about 1740 and later enlarged by the shipbuilder John Dialogue. Naturalist and author Samuel Nicholson Rhodes farmed the property he named Cedarcroft around the turn of the twentieth century, and it was his wife who supplied the name the borough carries today.

The arrival of the Atlantic City Railroad in the 1880s broke up the old farms into smaller settlements, and new train stations built in the 1890s brought the borough’s first wave of residential development. Audubon was incorporated on its own in 1905, carved from Haddon Township, and lost part of its own land in 1947 when neighboring Audubon Park split away.

Farmhouses that survived two centuries of subdivision and rail-driven growth tend to be the ones where older tools, coin and flatware stay intact, tucked away as smaller houses filled in the fields around them.
